How Can I Soften My Heart to Hear from Him?

I've been facing many challenges lately, and life's noise has dulled my sensitivity to God's voice. As a result, I’ve made some irrational decisions that are now backfiring. Reflecting on these choices, I realize most weren't aligned with God's will, and I’ve been struggling to stay focused in prayer. This has left me wondering:

  1. How can I soften my heart to hear more clearly from the Lord?
  2. How can I maintain a deep, heart-to-heart connection with Him?

I want to avoid this disconnection in the future and learn how to consistently lean on my Heavenly Father, allowing Him to lead my life.

Thank you

Answer description

I am sorry to hear of your difficulties. This is something every believer will experience in their walk with the Lord. Satan will not stop trying to attack and find ways to disrupt our spiritual walk.

I can see that you are aware that God did not go anywhere. Our God is all-powerful, ever-present, and our protector. But our carelessness, pride, and sinful natures will put distance between ourselves and God if we allow it. But the Almighty is always waiting for our return and will help us find that path if we turn our hearts back to Him. So you are asking, how do we go about this?

I don't believe there is only one way. We are all unique beings and He works with each of us in different ways. I have heard some believers say that simply beginning to sing hymns is their way to renewal. Others seek to bury themselves in the Word, letting God's wisdom soak into their souls as their rebound means. In my life, I have found another way that works for me and I have shared with many other believers who are struggling and they too have found a path back to fellowship.

I first discovered this amazing formula when I was on a rather dangerous mission trip. That morning before we boarded the plane everything seemed to go wrong and there was discord between our team members. I had no idea what to do and was very distressed. So as I sat on the plane flying toward our destination I was pouring out my heart to God in prayer. He brought one word to my mind, "praise". And thus I began praising God for anything that came into my mind. Things I knew were good, but also things that did not seem favorable. I did this for about forty minutes and without even realizing it my burdens just melted away. My team members saw the difference in my demeanor and their unrest went away also. Thus, in that time I learned that anytime I found myself in a state of unrest, the answer was always to just start praising God and it is as if you are drawn into the throne room in Jesus' presence. It was and it is so simple and it always works for me.

Some people ask, why praise Him for the bad things and I always reply, because God is in control of ALL things and we are commanded to give thanks for ALL things (I Thes 5:16-18). If we look at this from a bigger picture, we are simply telling God that we trust Him. And that is what He wants from us. He allows circumstances as you described so that we can grow in our faith and learn to trust Him more than we did before. So I hope what I have shared will be a tool that is helpful for you because bad times will come again.
